A door for the Metro BBS by Peter Deane
This game is absolutely PATHETIC! Don't say I didn't warn you. But I HAD
to get something written, and this is as good a place as any to start.
The game was originally whipped up in AmigaBASIC to run on our local
GBBS.pro BBS (an Apple II+ BBS), and was converted over to the Apple
BBS language very easily. (Almost identical to AmigaBASIC, but not as
powerful).
Accordingly it was designed for 40 column users, and is all text based.
There is a little interaction with the user, so it IS worth having a
quick look at, even for the ardent game player. (If for nothing less
than noting how horrible it is, and reminding oneself never to enter
THAT door again)!
I was mucking around with Percy's DoorRoutines the other day, and finally
got Hangman to run in standalone mode. So I thought I'd rip out the
old 'Shrink' and see if I could convert it. It took about 5 hours, and
in the process, I learned heaps.
I know the doors have really slowed to a trickle of late, so what the
heck, here's another one, that will keep users occupied for maybe 5
minutes. Here it is, my gift to you! You can't complain at the price
I'm asking for it :-)
It's in ACBasic, is terribly slow, and extremely inefficient. I'm also
concerned about the HUGE size of the executable produced. So be it!
I'm kinda proud of it, because at last, I have actually written a door!
This will now NOT be the last, I can assure you, and I hope to get a
decent one out real soon! I'll include the full source so you can see
just what to avoid if YOU decide to do a Metro Door!
The usual creation of a Directory called DOORx and renaming the
file TheShrink.door to DOORx applies to get this thing running.
In case you haven't heard of me yet, I run Inquestor BBS in Newcastle,
New South Wales, Australia. The number to ring from the US is
011-61-43-68-3100 at 1200/2400. Inquestor runs 24Hrs, and has an
80 meg drive quite nicely stocked with files for Amiga, TI, Apple,
Atari, and lotsa text files! (my Info Desk directory runs to 1.1 meg,
thanks Mark!). My postal address is PO Box 13, Waratah, NSW, 2298.
Thanks have to go to Percy for writing the BBS, and the door routines.
He's the guy who did all the hard work in THIS door. Pity I couldn't
have added something a bit more substantial to his frame. Next time!
Cheers from Down Under!
-Peter!
[How could I change these docs? My VERY FIRST door!
My CURRENT address and phone details, however are:
Peter Deane
PO Box 228
Swansea NSW 2281
Inquestor is still up 24hrs a day, only with a ZyXEL E+ (19200, until
the V34 roms DO come out) instead of the old MaestroXR I had back then.
The BBS phone number is now: +61-49-72-1647
